Brief Biography of M.R. Haeri

Brief Biography of M.R. Haeri

Mohammadreza Haeri

Mohammad Reza Haeri is an architect and urban planner. He studied both fields at the National University of Iran. His professional life spans several decades. At the moment, he serves as the editor of an urbanist quarterly called Andishe Iranshahr. His most recent projects include helping to establish the ancient qanat irrigation system as world heritage at a meeting of FAO/GHIAS in Rome in May 2014 (Refer to attachment). He is in charge of a fundamental rethinking of the regulation and organization of space in the Caspian sea region. He is leading the large project on the re-organization of the historic district connected to the shrine of Imam Reza, considered to be the most important holy shrine in Iran (located in Mashhad). One of his longest running projects has concerned the historic houses of Kashan. How was space conceived of and what were dwellers’ expectations of their homes? How are cultural practices reflected in spatial decisions? He has addressed such questions in exhibitions and articles as well as a major book entitled Home, Culture, Nature (2010).

He has worked untiringly on retrieving and keeping the technology that was developed long ago to deal with indoor air circulation and with matters of climate. For example, the tall and beautiful wind towers apparent in the local architecture of desert cities such as Kashan and Isfahan and island cities as in Qeshm have been increasingly abandoned in favor of gas air conditioning units. Haeri, who has become well-known in such locales, offers a series of workshops to local residents and their officials to encourage them to re-think the costs of the abandonment of the technical achievements of the past.

As a result of his work on Kashan, he was awarded an Agha Khan Fellowship in Islamic Architecture at MIT-Harvard in 1989.

Mohammad Reza Haeri is also an accomplished musician. He plays the sehtar and tar and has been working on a project that analyzes the links between Persian classical music and Persian architecture
